Seventh heaven for Blofeld
A&C travelled to Cheltenham Saracens on Saturday hoping to build on their win of last weekend. As it was hot and humid visiting skipper Venn lost the toss and Avening and Cherington were asked to bat on a bouncy looking track. Avening were boosted by the availability of their new Italian import Alfonso Carnivenny and he got the innings off to a quick start with 3 boundaries before being adjudged LBW. Number 3 Stewart Hudd then hit a quick 24 before missing a straight one and 2 more quick wickets meant the spectre of a low score loomed as the visitors struggled to 60-4. However Pete Blofeld had other ideas and had a golden eye for the boundary as he struck 17 4's on his way to a magnificent 105, his seventh career century. Well supported by Mike Alley and Rich Harvey with 23 and 21, Blofeld guided Avening and Cherington to 222-8. Denley took 3-53 and Gunn 3-63 for the Saracens.
Mike Alley was unleashed on the helpful track and he produced a thunder ball to rip out Bromder's middle stump and a fast yorker to see off captain Gunn as the Saracens were shaken and stirred. Tom Redpath was bowling well at the other end and was his never say never again attitude was rewarded with the wicket of opener Harvey for an obdurate 17. Two more quickly followed for Redpath who finished his 12 overs with 3-21. Blofeld then snapped up Finch for a stylish 21 and Alley then returned with two more wickets as the Saracens folded. It was left to Steve Ennis the Man with the Golden Arm, to claim the last wicket as the home side were dismissed for 89. Alley was the stand out bowler taking 4-5 from his 5 overs.
